What NetSuite is good at

NetSuite is a cloud ERP owned by Oracle. It brings accounting, order management, inventory, purchasing, billing and reporting into one system, and it is popular with companies that have outgrown QuickBooks or Xero, especially those with inventory, several entities or international sales.

It is also very customizable. Admins can add custom records, fields and forms, build approval workflows with SuiteFlow, and report with saved searches. Developers use SuiteScript, NetSuite’s JavaScript framework, for logic that runs when records are saved, on schedules, or behind custom endpoints called RESTlets. The SuiteTalk web services and REST APIs let other systems read and write NetSuite data. Most of the value in a NetSuite consultant comes from knowing which of these tools to use for each job, and when to leave the standard setup alone.

When NetSuite is the right choice, and when it is not

  • Right choice: you need real ERP accounting with inventory, multiple locations or subsidiaries, and your finance team wants one source of truth.
  • Right choice: you have already invested in NetSuite and the core accounting works well, but the edges (approvals, integrations, reports) need work.
  • Not ideal: a small service business with simple invoicing. QuickBooks Online or Xero, perhaps with a custom app on top, is lighter and cheaper to run.
  • Not ideal: companies wanting full control of their ERP code and hosting. Open-source options like Odoo or ERPNext give that, at the cost of running more yourself.
  • Watch out for: heavy customizations without documentation. NetSuite releases updates twice a year, and undocumented scripts make every upgrade a guessing game.

What we build in and around NetSuite

  • SuiteScript automation: auto-creating records, validating data on save, scheduled jobs and bulk updates that respect NetSuite’s usage limits.
  • SuiteFlow approval workflows for purchase orders, bills, sales orders and credit limits.
  • Integrations with ecommerce stores, CRMs, shipping, payments, warehouse and payroll tools through SuiteTalk, REST and RESTlets.
  • Saved searches, reports and dashboards your finance and operations teams can trust.
  • Custom records and forms for processes NetSuite does not cover out of the box.
  • Customer, vendor or sales rep portals that read from NetSuite, so people outside your team never need a NetSuite login.
  • Data cleanup and migration into NetSuite from spreadsheets, QuickBooks or an older system.

NetSuite consultant options: freelancer, partner firm, in-house or Zoti

  • A NetSuite freelancer: often an ex-admin or developer, good for a specific script or report. Availability can be patchy and big projects need more than one skill set.
  • An implementation firm: suits a full new NetSuite rollout across finance and operations. After go-live, smaller ongoing requests can be slow or costly to get through.
  • An in-house NetSuite administrator: valuable once the system is central to daily work. One person rarely covers finance setup, development and integrations together.
  • Zoti’s monthly team: a project manager plus developers who handle SuiteScript, integrations and the apps around NetSuite, on a plan from $499/month that includes ongoing changes. We focus on development work rather than accounting advice, so we work alongside your accountant or controller.

How we take over a NetSuite account

  1. Inventory what existsWe list every script, workflow, custom record, saved search and integration, and note which are active and which are failing.
  2. Talk to the people who use itFinance, operations and sales explain where NetSuite slows them down or forces workarounds.
  3. Plan and quoteYou get a written plan in plain English with the highest-impact fixes first.
  4. Build in a sandboxWhere your account has a sandbox, changes are built and tested there before deploying to production.
  5. Document and supportEach script and integration is documented, and your monthly plan covers fixes and changes, including checks around NetSuite release updates.

If NetSuite is more than you need

Some businesses come to us after realizing NetSuite is too much system for how they operate. In that case we may recommend a lighter accounting tool plus a custom operations app, or a custom ERP. Our NetSuite alternatives page lays out those options fairly.

More platforms software: odoo, power Apps and Power Automate, twilio and zoho.

Questions

Common questions

What does a NetSuite consultant do?

A NetSuite consultant configures and extends NetSuite: custom fields and records, approval workflows, saved searches, reports, SuiteScript automation and integrations with other systems. Some also help with initial implementation and accounting setup.

How much does NetSuite customization cost?

It depends on the number of scripts, workflows and integrations involved. Consultants usually bill hourly or by project. Zoti works on monthly plans from $499/month, with a written quote before anything starts.

What language is NetSuite customized in?

NetSuite custom code is written in SuiteScript, which is JavaScript running on NetSuite’s servers with NetSuite-specific modules. Integrations use NetSuite’s SOAP and REST web services or custom RESTlet endpoints.

Can you integrate NetSuite with Shopify, Salesforce or our warehouse system?

Usually yes. If a ready-made connector does not fit, a custom integration can sync orders, customers, inventory and invoices through NetSuite’s APIs, with error handling so failed records are flagged instead of lost.

Can you fix scripts another NetSuite developer wrote?

Yes. We start by reviewing every script and workflow, finding what is broken or risky, and documenting it before making changes.
