What Odoo and ERPNext are good at

Odoo is a suite of business apps (CRM, sales, inventory, purchasing, manufacturing, accounting, website, ecommerce, HR and more) that share one database. It comes in a free open-source Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition with extra apps and support. It is written in Python with a PostgreSQL database, and everything in it, including the core apps, is built as modules. That is what makes it so extendable: a developer can add fields, screens, reports and whole new apps the same way Odoo builds its own.

ERPNext is a fully open-source ERP built on the Frappe framework, also in Python. It covers similar ground and is popular with manufacturers, distributors and service companies that want no license fees and full access to the code. Both can be self-hosted or run on their makers’ hosted services.

When an open-source ERP is the right choice, and when it is not

  • Good fit: you want one system for sales, stock and accounting, and you want to own and change it rather than rent a closed product.
  • Good fit: your process has quirks (custom manufacturing steps, rental, unusual pricing) that you would otherwise pay to work around in NetSuite or SAP Business One.
  • Good fit: you have outgrown QuickBooks plus spreadsheets but a large ERP contract feels like too much.
  • Less ideal: you need very little beyond invoicing. A simple accounting tool is easier.
  • Less ideal: no one will look after it. Self-hosted Odoo or ERPNext needs updates, backups and someone to handle version upgrades, which can be real work when there are many custom modules.
  • Watch out for: Odoo’s hosted SaaS plan does not allow custom code modules, so serious customization means Odoo.sh or your own hosting.

What we build as an Odoo development company

  • Custom Odoo modules: new models, fields, views, wizards, scheduled actions and reports, packaged so they survive upgrades as well as possible.
  • ERPNext custom apps and doctypes, server scripts and print formats built on the Frappe framework.
  • Integrations with ecommerce stores, marketplaces, shipping carriers, payment providers, banks and CRMs through Odoo’s external API or ERPNext’s REST API.
  • Industry workflows: job costing, rental and returns, batch and lot tracking, multi-step approvals, field service visits.
  • Customer, vendor and staff portals tied to ERP data, built inside Odoo or as a separate web app.
  • Data migration from QuickBooks, spreadsheets or an older ERP, with balances checked against your books.
  • Version upgrades of existing Odoo installs, including porting custom modules to the new version.

Odoo consultant vs freelancer vs in-house developer

  • Freelance Odoo or ERPNext developer: good for a single module or fix. Quality varies a lot, and you need someone who also understands the business process, not just the code.
  • Odoo implementation firm: suits a standard rollout using mostly built-in apps. Ongoing custom work can be slow once the main project ends.
  • In-house Python developer: useful once the ERP is heavily customized and changes weekly. One person must cover code, hosting, upgrades and user support.
  • Zoti’s monthly team: a project manager, developers and designers on a plan from $499/month covering design, development, hosting and ongoing changes. It suits businesses that want an ERP shaped around them without hiring a team.

How an Odoo or ERPNext project works

  1. Map the processWe walk through how quotes, orders, stock, production and invoices move today, and where people work around the system.
  2. Standard first, custom secondWe use built-in apps wherever they fit and list only the gaps that truly need custom modules.
  3. Design and quoteYou see clickable designs for custom screens and get a written quote before building starts.
  4. Build in rounds on a test copyModules are built and tested on a staging copy with your real data, and you review each round.
  5. Go live and maintainWe migrate data, train your team, and keep hosting, backups, upgrades and changes covered on your plan.

Questions

Common questions

What does an Odoo consultant do?

An Odoo consultant maps your business process to Odoo apps, configures them, and identifies what needs custom development. A development-focused consultant also writes custom modules, integrations and reports.

Is Odoo or ERPNext better for a small business?

Both work well. Odoo has a larger app range, a polished interface and a big partner ecosystem, with some features in the paid edition. ERPNext is fully open source with no license fees and is strong in manufacturing and distribution. The right one depends on your process and who will maintain it.

How much does Odoo customization cost?

It depends on how many custom modules and integrations you need and how much data moves over. Zoti works on monthly plans from $499/month, with a written quote before work starts.

Do you need an ERPNext consultant to set it up?

Not always. A small business with a simple process can set up ERPNext itself. A consultant helps when you need custom workflows, integrations, data migration or reliable hosting and upgrades.

Can you upgrade our old Odoo version with custom modules?

Yes. Custom modules have to be ported to each new Odoo version, and data migrated with them. We review the modules first, drop what is no longer needed, and test the upgrade on a copy before switching.
