Power Apps and Power Automate development
A Power Apps consultant builds business apps and Power Automate flows on Microsoft’s Power Platform, using your Microsoft 365 data in SharePoint, Dataverse, Excel or SQL, so approvals, forms and handoffs stop living in email. Zoti is a Power Apps and Power Automate development company for small and growing businesses, and builds fully custom apps when the platform is not enough, starting at $499/month.

What Power Apps and Power Automate are good at
Power Platform is Microsoft’s low-code family. Power Apps builds business apps: canvas apps, where you lay out each screen freely, and model-driven apps, which are generated from data tables in Dataverse, Microsoft’s business database. Power Automate builds flows that run when something happens, such as a form submitted, a file added or an email received, and it can also automate desktop tasks. Power BI handles reporting, and Copilot Studio builds chat agents.
The big advantage is that it sits inside Microsoft 365. Your staff already sign in with their work accounts, apps run in Teams and on phones, and hundreds of connectors reach SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, SQL Server, Dynamics 365 and many outside services. For a company already paying for Microsoft 365, a small internal app can be built without new infrastructure.
When Power Platform is the right choice, and when it is not
- Good fit: internal tools for staff on Microsoft 365, such as approval requests, inspections, asset check-outs, onboarding checklists and time-off requests.
- Good fit: replacing email chains and Excel trackers with a form, a SharePoint list or Dataverse table, and a Power Automate approval flow.
- Less ideal: customer-facing apps. Power Pages exists for external sites, but a custom web app usually gives better design control and simpler costs for outside users.
- Less ideal: large data on SharePoint lists. Delegation limits mean some filters and searches only look at part of the data, which causes confusing results as lists grow.
- Watch out for: licensing. Premium connectors, Dataverse and some features need extra licenses per user, so check costs before the app spreads across the company.
- Compared with Retool or a custom app, Power Platform wins on Microsoft integration and loses on flexibility, version control and performance for complex apps.
What we build with Power Apps and Power Automate
- Canvas apps for field and office staff: inspections with photos and signatures, job sheets, stock counts, visitor sign-in.
- Model-driven apps on Dataverse for case tracking, assets, contracts or simple CRM needs.
- Power Automate cloud flows for approvals, notifications, document generation, data syncs between systems, and scheduled reports.
- Fixes for existing apps and flows: delegation warnings, slow screens, failed flows nobody noticed, and flows owned by an employee who has left.
- Moving data off fragile Excel files and SharePoint lists into Dataverse or SQL when apps outgrow them.
- Custom connectors to reach APIs Power Platform does not support out of the box.
- When the platform is the wrong tool, a custom web or mobile app that still signs in with Microsoft accounts and connects to Microsoft 365.
Hiring a Power Apps consultant or Power Automate developer
- Freelance Power Apps developer: good for one app or a few flows. Make sure the app and flows are owned by a service account, not the freelancer, before they leave.
- Microsoft-focused IT provider: handy if they already manage your Microsoft 365. App development is often a side service rather than their main skill.
- Citizen developer on staff: someone in the business learns to build apps. Fast and cheap at first, but apps often become fragile when that person changes role.
- Zoti’s monthly team: a project manager and developers who build and maintain Power Platform solutions, and can move to fully custom code when an app outgrows it. Plans start at $499/month and include ongoing changes.
How a Power Platform project works
- Map the processWe follow the request, approval or task from start to finish and note every person, form and file involved.
- Choose the right toolWe check licensing, data size and who needs access, then recommend Power Platform or a custom app honestly.
- Design the screensYou see clickable designs and adjust them before anything is built.
- Build, test and documentApps and flows are built in a separate environment, tested with real cases, and documented so they do not depend on one person.
- Roll out and supportWe move the solution to production, train users, and handle fixes and changes on your monthly plan.
More platforms software: twilio, zoho, salesforce and hubSpot.
Common questions
What does a Power Apps consultant do?
A Power Apps consultant designs and builds apps on Microsoft Power Platform, connects them to your data in SharePoint, Dataverse, Excel or SQL, and sets up Power Automate flows for approvals and notifications. Good ones also plan licensing and app ownership.
How much does Power Apps development cost?
The build cost depends on the number of screens, flows and data sources, and Microsoft licenses for premium features are a separate cost. Zoti works on monthly plans from $499/month, with a written quote before work starts.
Is Power Apps good for customer-facing apps?
It is built mainly for internal staff on Microsoft 365. Microsoft offers Power Pages for external sites, but for customer portals and public apps a custom web app usually gives you more control over design, performance and cost.
Why does my Power Automate flow keep failing?
Common causes are expired connections, a flow owned by someone who left, changed column names in SharePoint or Excel, throttling limits, or missing licenses for premium connectors. A review of the run history usually shows which one.
Should we use Power Apps or build a custom app?
Power Apps is a good choice for internal tools when your team is on Microsoft 365 and the data is modest. A custom app is better for customer-facing software, complex logic, large data, or when per-user licensing gets expensive.
