What .NET and C# are

.NET is Microsoft’s free, open-source platform for building software, and C# is the main language written on it. Modern .NET (the line that began as .NET Core) runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, in containers and on any major cloud. Around it sit ASP.NET Core for websites and APIs, Blazor for interactive web front ends written in C#, Entity Framework Core for working with databases, and .NET MAUI for desktop and mobile apps.

The older .NET Framework is a different thing: it runs only on Windows, still receives security fixes as part of Windows, but gets no new features. A lot of small and mid-sized businesses run internal systems built on it years ago, often with Web Forms, WCF or WinForms, and those systems are a common reason people search for .NET development help.

When .NET is the right choice, and when it is not

Compared with Java, .NET is a close cousin: both are mature, fast and well suited to large business systems. The choice usually comes down to what your company already uses and who will maintain it.

  • Good fit: your company runs on Microsoft 365, SQL Server, Active Directory or Azure, and the new software needs to sit comfortably alongside them.
  • Good fit: business applications with a lot of rules, such as quoting, scheduling, billing or compliance, where C#’s strict typing catches mistakes early.
  • Good fit: you already have .NET code and developers who know it, so staying on .NET keeps the knowledge you have.
  • Good fit: Windows desktop software that staff rely on and that is not going away.
  • Weaker fit: a quick startup MVP where a lighter framework like Rails, Laravel or Node.js gets a first version out faster and cheaper to host.
  • Weaker fit: projects built mainly around data science or AI libraries, where Python has the larger ecosystem.

What we build as a C# development company

  • Web apps and customer portals with ASP.NET Core, using Blazor or a React front end.
  • APIs that connect your systems to Microsoft 365, Dynamics, QuickBooks, payment providers or industry tools.
  • Upgrades from .NET Framework to modern .NET, so older apps can run on Linux, in containers or on cheaper cloud hosting.
  • Replacements for Web Forms, WinForms and VB.NET apps whose original developers have left.
  • Background services for scheduled imports, reports, emails and file processing.
  • Internal tools that use Microsoft sign-in (Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory), so staff log in with the accounts they already have.

.NET developer for hire: freelancer, in-house or a team?

The .NET hiring pool is large, which works in your favor. A freelance C# developer for hire is easy to find and can be a good fit for a contained job, such as adding a report or fixing a bug in an existing app. The usual risks apply: one person, no backup, and code only they understand.

An in-house .NET developer is worth it when you have years of steady work on a core system. Remember that one hire rarely covers design, hosting, database work and project management, and replacing them when they leave can mean months of lost momentum.

An offshore .NET agency can lower hourly cost but leaves you managing priorities and quality across time zones.

Zoti works as your .NET development team: designers, developers and a dedicated project manager, with hosting and ongoing changes included, on a monthly plan from $499/month. You explain what the business needs; the project manager turns it into work and keeps it moving.

How we take over or upgrade a .NET app

  1. InventoryWe list every project, framework version, NuGet package, database and server the app depends on.
  2. Assess the upgrade pathWe tell you what can move to modern .NET as is, what needs rework, and what is better rebuilt.
  3. Make it safe to changeSource control, backups and tests around the riskiest business rules come first.
  4. Upgrade in slicesThe app moves over a piece at a time, so the business keeps running on the old version until each part is proven.
  5. Keep improvingOnce stable, new features ship in rounds you review, and we keep the platform current.

More backend software: django, go (Golang), java and PHP.

Questions

Common questions

How much does it cost to hire a .NET developer?

It depends on experience, location and the type of engagement. As a rough guide, US freelance .NET developers often charge from about $60 to $150 or more per hour, and in-house salaries add benefits and recruiting costs. Zoti custom projects start at $499/month for a full team, with a written quote first.

Is .NET still a good choice for new projects?

Yes. Modern .NET is open source, cross-platform, fast and released on a regular yearly schedule with long-term support versions. It is a sensible choice for business software, especially in companies already using Microsoft tools.

Can you upgrade our app from .NET Framework to .NET?

Usually, yes. Class libraries and APIs often move over with moderate work, while Web Forms and WCF parts typically need to be rebuilt. We assess the app first and give you a written plan and quote.

What is the difference between .NET and C#?

C# is a programming language. .NET is the platform it runs on, including the runtime, libraries and frameworks like ASP.NET Core. Other languages such as F# and VB.NET also run on .NET.

Do I need Azure to use .NET?

No. .NET apps run well on Azure, but also on AWS, Google Cloud, your own servers or simple Linux hosting. We pick hosting based on cost, your existing accounts and what the app needs.
