What Django is, and how Flask differs
Django is an open source web framework written in Python. Its motto is "the web framework for perfectionists with deadlines", and it earns that by including most of what a business app needs out of the box: an ORM for working with the database, database migrations, user accounts and permissions, forms, security protections against common attacks, and an automatic admin interface.
Django has been in production use since 2005, at companies large and small, and it puts security first: protection against SQL injection, cross-site scripting and cross-site request forgery is on by default, and the project publishes security releases on a regular schedule.
That admin interface is underrated. From your data model alone, Django generates a working back office where staff can search, edit and manage records. For many internal tools, it covers a large share of the work before any custom screens are built.
Flask is the other well-known Python web framework. It is deliberately small: routing and request handling, with everything else added through extensions you choose. Flask suits small services, APIs and teams that want full control; Django suits complete applications with many models, users and roles. FastAPI is a newer option focused on fast, typed APIs.
When Django is a good fit, and when it is not
- Good fit: data-heavy business systems such as order management, intake and case tracking, inventory, scheduling and reporting.
- Good fit: apps that need AI or data science, because they can share Python code and libraries with the rest of the system.
- Good fit: projects where a solid admin panel saves weeks of building back-office screens.
- Less ideal: highly interactive single-page interfaces built entirely in Django templates. Pair Django with React, or with htmx for lighter interactivity.
- Compared with Laravel: very similar philosophy (batteries included, strong conventions). The choice usually comes down to whether your team and ecosystem lean Python or PHP. Compared with Node.js: Django gives more structure out of the box; Node.js gives more freedom and is often simpler for real-time features.
Django and Flask work we take on
- New Django applications: client portals, internal tools and SaaS products with a Django REST API behind a React or mobile front end.
- Upgrades of Django apps several major versions behind, including Python 2 code that needs moving to Python 3.
- Takeovers of Django or Flask projects whose developer has left, starting with a written review.
- Flask services and APIs, or consolidating a sprawl of small Flask apps into one maintainable system.
- Adding AI features, background jobs and reporting to an existing Django app.
Django developer for hire, consultant or development company
A freelance Django developer for hire suits a clear task in a healthy codebase: a new feature, an integration, a set of bug fixes. Because Django is convention-heavy, a good Django developer can be productive in someone else's project quickly.
A Django consultant is worth bringing in for an upgrade plan, a performance problem (slow pages are often caused by a few database queries) or a security review. Ask for findings in writing.
An in-house developer makes sense when Django software is core to the business and there is enough work to fill the year.
A Django development company like Zoti covers design, backend, front end, hosting and project management in one team. Zoti's monthly plans start at $499/month and include design, development, hosting and ongoing changes. The same applies if you are looking for a Flask development company: we work in both.
How we take over or upgrade a Django app
- Secure accessRepository, hosting, database, domain and email accounts are moved into your ownership.
- ReviewWe check Django and Python versions, outdated packages, settings, migrations, tests and backups.
- PlanYou get a plain-English list of risks and a recommended order of work, with a written quote.
- Upgrade step by stepWe move through supported Django releases one at a time, testing as we go, rather than one big jump.
- Build forwardWith the base stable, new features ship in rounds you review each month.
More backend software: go (Golang), java, PHP and ruby on Rails.
Common questions
How much does it cost to hire a Django developer?
Costs vary with experience and how you hire, whether freelance, full-time or through an agency. Zoti's custom projects start at $499/month for a full team, with the exact price set in a written quote.
Is Django still a good choice?
Yes. Django is actively maintained, has regular long-term support releases and remains one of the most productive ways to build data-heavy business web apps.
Django or Flask: which should I use?
Django for complete applications with users, roles, many data types and an admin panel. Flask for small services and APIs, or when you want to choose every component yourself.
Can you upgrade our old Django app?
Yes. We upgrade through each supported version in turn, update or replace outdated packages and add tests where they are missing, so the app keeps working throughout.
Can Django work with a React front end or a mobile app?
Yes. Django REST Framework is a common way to give React, React Native or Flutter front ends a clean API, while staff keep using the Django admin.
