What React is and what it is good at
React is a JavaScript library, first released by Meta (then Facebook) and maintained as open source, for building the part of an application people see and click. Instead of writing whole pages, you build small components (a search box, an order row, a date picker) and React keeps the screen in sync as the data behind them changes.
That model fits software where the screen changes a lot without reloading: dashboards that update, forms that show and hide fields as you answer, drag-and-drop boards, chat, filters over thousands of records. React on its own only handles the interface, so it is usually paired with a framework such as Next.js for routing and server rendering, and a backend in Node.js, Python, PHP or another language for the data.
Its biggest practical advantage is the size of its ecosystem. Most problems a business app runs into (tables, charts, maps, forms, authentication screens) already have well-used React libraries, and React developers are easier to find than developers for most other front-end tools.
When React is the right choice, and when it is not
React is a strong default for logged-in business software. It is less obviously right in a few situations:
- Good fit: internal tools, admin panels, client portals, SaaS products and anything with lots of interactive screens.
- Good fit: when you may want a mobile app later, since React Native lets a team reuse skills and some code.
- Think twice: a mostly static marketing site or blog. A site builder or a static site generator is often simpler, and plain client-side React can hurt search visibility unless it is server rendered (Next.js solves this).
- Think twice: a team already deep in Angular or Vue. Rewriting a working app just to switch frameworks rarely pays off.
- Compared with Angular: React is lighter and more flexible, Angular is more opinionated and includes more out of the box. Compared with Vue: both work well, React simply has the larger hiring pool and library choice.
What we build with React
- Customer and vendor portals where people log in to see orders, documents, invoices and status.
- Internal dashboards that pull numbers from your CRM, accounting and spreadsheets into one screen.
- SaaS products, including white label SaaS built under your own brand.
- Booking, quoting and order forms with pricing logic, file uploads and payments.
- Replacements for spreadsheets and Access databases that have become the system everyone depends on.
- New screens or features on an existing React app your previous developer left behind.
Hiring a React development company vs a React developer for hire
There are four common ways to get React work done, and each fits a different situation.
A freelance React developer for hire is usually the cheapest per hour and fine for a well-defined task, such as fixing a bug or adding one screen. The risk is that one person covers design, backend, testing and hosting alone, and if they move on, the knowledge leaves with them.
A React consultant reviews an existing app, untangles performance problems or advises on architecture. Useful for a second opinion, but a consultant usually does not stay to build.
An in-house React developer gives you full control and someone who knows the business, but you also take on recruiting, salary, benefits, management and the gap when they leave.
A React development company like Zoti gives you a full team (design, front end, backend, testing) and a project manager. With Zoti that runs on a monthly plan starting at $499/month, covering design, development, hosting and ongoing changes, with a written quote before work starts.
How a React project works with us
- Map it outWe write down who uses the app, every screen they need and where the data comes from before anything is built.
- Clickable designsYou click through the screens as a prototype and we adjust them until they match how your team works.
- Build in roundsWe build the React front end and the backend behind it in short rounds you log into and review.
- Or take over your codeIf you already have a React app, we review the codebase, list what is risky, and fix the urgent issues first.
- Launch and keep goingWe host it, watch it and keep making changes as your business needs them.
More web & mobile software: react Native, flutter, typeScript and angular.
Common questions
How much does it cost to hire a React developer?
It varies widely. Freelance React developers in the US commonly bill somewhere from about $50 to over $150 an hour depending on experience, and a salaried in-house developer also costs benefits and management time. Zoti's custom projects start at $499/month for a full team, with a written quote based on what you need.
Is React good for business web apps?
Yes. Most dashboards, portals and SaaS products are a good fit for React because they have many interactive screens and benefit from its large library ecosystem. For a simple brochure site, a lighter tool is often enough.
Is React good for SEO?
Plain client-side React can be harder for search engines to read. Rendering pages on the server with a framework like Next.js fixes most of that, which is why public-facing React sites usually use one.
Can you take over a React app another developer built?
Yes. We start with a code review covering dependencies, structure, security and hosting, tell you plainly what shape it is in, then fix the urgent problems before adding new features.
What backend do you use with React?
Whatever fits the project. Node.js with TypeScript is common, but we also pair React with Python, PHP and other backends, including the one your existing system already runs on.
