What Angular is and why businesses use it

Angular is an open source front-end framework maintained by Google and written in TypeScript. Where React is a library you assemble with other tools, Angular ships with most of what a large application needs already decided: routing, forms, HTTP calls, dependency injection, testing tools and a command line tool that generates code in a consistent structure.

That structure is the reason Angular is common in enterprise software, banking, insurance and internal company systems. When many developers work on the same app over many years, having one agreed way to do things keeps the codebase readable. Angular also releases on a predictable schedule with documented upgrade paths, which matters for software expected to live a long time.

One point that causes confusion: AngularJS (version 1.x) and Angular (version 2 and later) are different frameworks. AngularJS reached end of life in January 2022 and no longer receives official updates, so apps still running on it are a security and hiring problem.

When Angular is a good choice, and when it is not

  • Good fit: data-heavy internal systems with many forms, roles and screens, such as claims processing, scheduling, inventory or admin consoles.
  • Good fit: your company or your clients already standardize on Angular, so new work stays consistent.
  • Less ideal: small apps or prototypes, where Angular's structure is more setup than the project needs and React or Vue gets you there with less code.
  • Less ideal: if you will hire freelancers often, since the pool of React developers is larger.
  • Compared with React: Angular trades flexibility for consistency. Neither is better in general; the right choice depends on team size, the app's lifespan and who will maintain it.
  • If you already have a working Angular app, switching frameworks is rarely worth the cost. Keeping it on a supported version and improving it in place is almost always the cheaper path.

Angular work we take on

  • New Angular applications: portals, back-office systems and SaaS front ends with a backend in Node.js, .NET, Java, Python or PHP.
  • AngularJS to Angular migrations, done screen by screen or as a planned rewrite, so the business keeps running throughout.
  • Version upgrades for Angular apps several major versions behind, including replacing libraries that no longer support current releases.
  • Takeovers of Angular apps whose original developer or agency is gone, starting with a written review of the code.
  • Performance and usability fixes for slow screens, large forms and tables with thousands of rows.

Angular developer for hire, consultant or Angular development company

An Angular developer for hire works well when you have an established app, a technical lead to direct them and a list of specific tickets. Without that direction, a solo developer can spend a lot of time just learning an unfamiliar codebase.

An Angular consultant is useful for a short, focused job: auditing an app, planning an AngularJS migration or deciding whether to upgrade or rewrite. Ask for a written plan you can hand to whoever does the work.

In-house developers make sense when Angular software is central to your business and you have enough work to keep them busy year round.

An Angular development company such as Zoti gives you design, front end, backend and testing in one team led by a project manager. Zoti works on monthly plans starting at $499/month covering design, development, hosting and ongoing changes, and you get a written quote before any work starts.

How we take over or upgrade an Angular app

  1. Get accessWe collect the code repository, hosting, domain and any third-party accounts so nothing depends on one person.
  2. Review the codeWe check the Angular version, outdated libraries, security issues, tests and how the app is built and deployed.
  3. Written planYou get a plain-English summary of risks and a recommended order: urgent fixes, upgrades, then new features.
  4. Upgrade in roundsWe move through versions or migrate screens in small rounds you can test, rather than one risky switch.
  5. Keep it currentOngoing changes include keeping Angular and its libraries on supported versions.

More web & mobile software: swift, react, react Native and flutter.

Questions

Common questions

How much does it cost to hire an Angular developer?

It depends on experience, location and whether you hire a freelancer, an employee or an agency. Zoti's custom projects start at $499/month for a full team, with the final price set in a written quote based on the size of the app and the work needed.

Is Angular still a good choice?

Yes. Angular is actively maintained by Google, releases regularly and remains common in large business applications. It is a sensible choice for big, long-lived apps, though smaller projects may be simpler in React or Vue.

Do we need to migrate off AngularJS?

If the app matters to your business, yes. AngularJS no longer receives official updates, so security issues will not be fixed and developers who want to work on it are harder to find. The migration can be done in stages.

Should we upgrade our Angular app or rewrite it?

Usually upgrade. Angular provides step-by-step upgrade paths between versions. A rewrite only makes sense when the code is badly structured or the app needs to change substantially anyway.

Can you work alongside our in-house developers?

Yes. We can follow your existing conventions, review process and deployment pipeline, or take on a separate part of the app.
