What Flutter is

Flutter is a toolkit from Google for building apps from a single codebase. Developers write in Dart, a language also made by Google, and Flutter draws every part of the interface itself with its own rendering engine instead of using each platform's built-in buttons and menus.

Because Flutter controls every pixel, an app looks and behaves the same on an old Android phone and a new iPhone. That makes it popular for brand-heavy apps with custom visuals and animation, and it removes a whole category of "it looks wrong on Android" bugs. Flutter can also target web, Windows, macOS and Linux from the same code, though phones remain where it is strongest.

Developers also like its hot reload feature, which shows code changes on a running device in about a second, so design tweaks and feedback rounds move quickly.

For a business, the practical result is one codebase to pay for and maintain. Features, fixes and design changes are made once and ship to iPhone and Android together, so the two versions never fall out of step. Flutter apps can still call native iOS and Android code when a device feature is not covered by an existing package, so you are not boxed in later.

When Flutter is the right choice

  • Good fit: customer-facing apps where a custom, consistent look matters, such as booking, ordering, fitness or loyalty apps.
  • Good fit: field and operations apps that need forms, camera, GPS, barcode scanning and offline storage on both platforms.
  • Good fit: an app plus a simple desktop or tablet version for staff, from the same code.
  • Compared with React Native: both produce solid cross-platform apps. React Native suits teams that already work in JavaScript and React. Flutter suits projects that want identical visuals everywhere and do not mind Dart, a smaller but growing hiring pool.
  • Not ideal: public websites that need to rank in search, where a normal web framework does better, and apps that depend on brand-new iOS or Android features the day they launch, where native Swift or Kotlin is safer.

What we build with Flutter

  • Customer apps for booking, ordering, payments, account history and push notifications.
  • Staff and field apps with checklists, photos, signatures, barcode scanning and offline sync.
  • Companion apps for an existing web platform, sharing the same backend, logins and data.
  • MVPs for founders who need to test an app idea on both platforms without paying for two builds.
  • White label apps for businesses that want a branded app released under their own name.

Flutter development company, consultant or freelancer?

A Flutter developer for hire on a freelance basis can be a good match for a small app with a clear scope, or for fixing one problem in an existing app. Before you hire a Flutter freelancer, check who will handle the backend, the designs, app store submissions and the yearly updates Apple and Google require. Those are often where solo projects stall.

A Flutter consultant helps when you need an outside review: is the existing app well built, should you keep Flutter or move, why is it slow on older phones. Consultants advise; they rarely stay on to build.

Hiring in-house is worth it when the app is your main product and there is steady work. Dart developers are fewer than JavaScript developers, so plan for a longer search.

A Flutter development company covers the full job with one team. At Zoti, that is designers, mobile and backend developers and a dedicated project manager, on a monthly plan from $499/month that includes design, development, hosting and ongoing changes.

How a Flutter project works

  1. Map it outWe list every user type, screen, device feature and system the app must talk to.
  2. Clickable designsYou try a prototype on your phone and we refine it before writing code.
  3. Build in roundsTest builds land on your phone each round so you review real software, not slides.
  4. ReleaseWe prepare store listings and privacy details and handle Apple and Google review.
  5. Keep it currentWe update Flutter and its packages for new OS versions and add features as you need them.

More web & mobile software: typeScript, angular, swift and react.

Questions

Common questions

How much does it cost to hire a Flutter developer?

Rates vary widely with experience and location, and an app also needs design, a backend and store releases. Zoti's custom projects start at $499/month for a full team, with a written quote based on your app before work begins.

Is Flutter good for business apps?

Yes. Forms, lists, maps, payments, camera and offline storage are all well supported, and one codebase for both platforms keeps the cost of changes down over the life of the app.

Is Flutter better than React Native?

Neither is better for every project. Flutter gives more consistent visuals across devices; React Native fits teams already using React and JavaScript. Both are used in production by large companies.

Can Flutter build a website too?

It can, and it works well for app-like tools used behind a login. For public pages that need to rank in search, a regular web framework is usually the better choice.

Can you take over a Flutter app another developer built?

Yes. We review the code and packages, get it building with current Flutter versions, fix the urgent issues and then carry on with new work.
