MongoDB consultant and development company

A MongoDB consultant designs, reviews and tunes MongoDB databases and the apps that use them, from how documents are structured to why queries are slow. Zoti builds and maintains MongoDB-backed software, and tells you honestly when a relational database would serve you better, with a full team and a dedicated project manager, starting at $499/month.

What MongoDB is and what it is good at

MongoDB is a document database. Instead of rows in tables, it stores records as JSON-like documents, and each document can have its own set of fields, including nested lists and objects. A product, for example, can hold its variants, images and specifications in one document, even when a shirt and a power tool have completely different attributes.

That flexibility makes MongoDB good for data whose shape varies or changes often, for reading and writing whole records quickly, and for spreading large volumes of data across many servers. It supports indexes, multi-document transactions and an aggregation pipeline for grouping and reporting. MongoDB Atlas, the company’s managed cloud service, runs it on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, and adds features such as full-text and vector search for AI use.

When MongoDB is the right choice, and when it is not

MongoDB tends to fit well for:

  • Product catalogs where items have very different attributes.
  • Content and form responses, where every form or page type has its own fields.
  • Event, activity and log data that is written constantly and read in bulk.
  • Apps whose data model is still changing quickly, early in a product’s life.
  • Node.js apps where JSON flows straight from the database to the front end.

An honest word on MongoDB vs PostgreSQL

A lot of business data is relational: customers have orders, orders have line items, invoices link to payments, jobs link to staff. MongoDB can model all of that, but you end up either copying data into several documents and keeping the copies in sync, or joining across collections in ways a relational database handles more naturally. Accounting-style reports are usually simpler to write and to trust in SQL.

That is why we often recommend PostgreSQL for new business systems, sometimes using its JSONB columns for the parts of the data that really are flexible. If you already run on MongoDB and it works, there is rarely a reason to move; the usual fixes are better document design and indexes. And when a specific part of your system is clearly document-shaped, MongoDB can be exactly the right tool.

What we build and fix as a MongoDB development company

  • Node.js and Python apps on MongoDB, from APIs to full web and mobile products.
  • Schema reviews that restructure documents around how the app actually reads and writes data.
  • Index and query tuning for slow pages, timeouts and high Atlas bills.
  • Aggregation pipelines and reporting exports, including feeds into a SQL database or warehouse for dashboards.
  • Security reviews: authentication, network access, user roles and encryption settings.
  • Migrations into MongoDB, or out of it to PostgreSQL when the data has become mostly relational.

Hiring a MongoDB consultant, a freelancer or a team

Most JavaScript developers have used MongoDB, so freelancers are easy to find. Fewer are good at document design for data that will grow for years, which is where most MongoDB problems start. A freelancer is a fine choice for a defined task when you have a way to review the work.

A MongoDB consultant is worth it when an existing database is slow, expensive or behaving oddly. A good review covers document structure, indexes, query patterns and how the app uses the driver, not just server settings.

Zoti works as your MongoDB development company, designing the data and the app together, hosting it and making ongoing changes, with a dedicated project manager, on a monthly plan from $499/month. If your data would be better off in a relational database, we will say so before you build.

How we review a MongoDB app

  1. Collect the evidenceSlow query logs, index usage, collection sizes and the bill, alongside the app code that queries them.
  2. Map access patternsWe list how each screen and job reads and writes data, because document design should follow that.
  3. Quick wins firstMissing indexes and wasteful queries are fixed early, often with a visible drop in load.
  4. Restructure where neededDocuments that grow without limit or are copied everywhere are redesigned and migrated in safe steps.
  5. Monitor and maintainAlerts, tested backups and regular reviews keep it healthy as the data grows.

Questions

Common questions

What does a MongoDB consultant do?

A MongoDB consultant designs document structures, tunes indexes and queries, reviews security and backups, and plans scaling or migrations. Zoti also builds and maintains the app that uses the database.

Should I use MongoDB or PostgreSQL?

For most business systems with customers, orders and invoices, PostgreSQL is the safer default. MongoDB fits data that varies a lot in shape, such as catalogs, content and event logs. Many apps use one for the core and the other for a specific job.

Why is my MongoDB database slow?

Common causes are missing or unused indexes, documents that keep growing, queries that scan whole collections, and storing related data in a way that needs many round trips. Profiling the slowest queries usually points to the fix.

How much does MongoDB development cost?

It depends on the app, the data and how much needs fixing. Zoti custom projects start at $499/month, covering design, development, hosting and ongoing changes, with a written quote before any work. Database hosting costs depend on your usage.

Can you migrate us from MongoDB to PostgreSQL?

Yes. We design the relational tables, transform and import the documents, check counts and totals, and update the app to use the new database, moving in stages so the business keeps running.
